History

The Rolleiflex Automat series introduced automatic film spacing and frame counting, eliminating the possibility of overlapping exposures. Available with either Zeiss Tessar or Schneider Xenar lenses, these cameras represented the pinnacle of pre-war TLR design.

Buying Tips

The Automat series spans several sub-models (K4A, K4B, MX, X). Here is what to inspect when buying.

  • Automat loading mechanism: The signature feature of this camera is its automatic film loading. Test it with a roll of film or backing paper — the mechanism commonly fails and is the single most important thing to check.
  • Shutter servicing: Most surviving examples need or have needed a shutter CLA. Fire the shutter at all speeds, listening for hesitation or sticking at slow speeds (1s, 1/2s).
  • Lens variant: These came with either a Zeiss Tessar or Schneider Xenar. Both are good performers, but identify which you are buying — it affects value.
  • Viewing lens haze: The viewing lens on Automats is prone to internal haze. Look through the waist-level finder in bright light and check for a milky or foggy image.
  • EV coupling (MX-EVS only): The EV coupling between aperture and shutter can seize from disuse. This only applies to the later MX-EVS model (1954–1956) — earlier Automat models do not have EV coupling. On an MX-EVS, check that both controls move freely and independently when unlocked.
