History

The 2.8C continued the f/2.8 line started by the 2.8A in 1950, adding a modern Synchro-Compur shutter with EV coupling. It provided improved low-light capability and shallower depth of field options over the f/3.5 models.

  • First f/2.8 with Synchro-Compur shutter and EV coupling

Collector Notes

Improved 2.8B with modern shutter. Popular with collectors.

Buying Tips

The 2.8C is the earliest Synchro-Compur f/2.8 Rolleiflex. Here is what to look for when buying.

  • Lens variant: The 2.8C comes with either a Zeiss Planar or Schneider Xenotar. Both are excellent, but the Planar typically commands a small premium. Confirm which lens is fitted before agreeing on a price.
  • Slow shutter speeds: Test the shutter at all speeds, paying close attention to 1s and 1/2s. Older Synchro-Compur shutters are prone to sluggish slow speeds.
  • EV coupling: The EV coupling system links aperture and shutter speed. Some users prefer to disengage it. Check that the coupling mechanism works correctly and can be unlocked if desired.
  • Selenium meter: Some 2.8C models have an accessory selenium meter. If present, test it against a known-good meter — selenium cells weaken with age and cannot be repaired.
  • CLA history: Older examples are more likely to need a full clean, lubricate, and adjust. Ask the seller about service history and factor CLA cost into your budget if unknown.
