History

The Rolleicord Va made small refinements to the V, including improved ergonomics and minor mechanical tweaks. Like all Rolleicords, it has no built-in meter. It represents excellent value for those seeking Rollei quality.

Collector Notes

Refined version of V with improved ergonomics. Excellent performer.

Buying Tips

The Rolleicord Va is one of the best value propositions in medium format photography -- Rolleiflex build quality at a fraction of the price.

  • Shutter speeds: Test all speeds from 1s to 1/500s. The Synchro-Compur MXV is a reliable shutter but old lubricants can cause slow speeds to drag. A CLA restores accuracy if needed.
  • Xenar lens: The Schneider Xenar 75mm f/3.5 delivers excellent results when clean. Inspect all elements for haze, fungus, or coating damage by holding the lens to a light source.
  • Film counter: Advance the film counter through several frames. It should increment reliably and stop at each frame. A malfunctioning counter can lead to overlapping frames or wasted film.
  • Focus knob: The Va moved the focus knob to the left side. Turn it through its full range and check for smooth, consistent movement. Binding or gritty feel means the helicoid needs cleaning.
  • Body and leatherette: Check that the covering is intact and not peeling. Replacement leatherette is available but original condition adds to resale value.
  • Flash sync: Test the M and X sync terminals if you plan to use flash. Corrosion on the PC socket is common but usually cleanable.
