Buying Tips

The 2.8D is a refined version of the 2.8C — the last unmetered 2.8 Rolleiflex. Here is what to check.

  • No built-in meter: The 2.8D has no light meter, so you will need a handheld meter or phone app. This is actually an advantage — no dead selenium cells to worry about.
  • Shutter accuracy: Fire the shutter at every speed from 1s to 1/500s. Listen for consistent timing and watch for hesitation at slow speeds, which indicates the need for a CLA.
  • Lens elements: Examine both taking and viewing lens elements for cleaning marks, scratches, or swirl patterns from improper cleaning over the decades. Minor cleaning marks are common but heavy ones affect contrast.
  • EV scale coupling: Test the EV coupling system by setting an EV value and confirming aperture and shutter speed move together. Check that the coupling can be disengaged for manual control.
  • Value proposition: The 2.8D is generally more affordable than the metered 2.8E and 2.8F while sharing the same excellent optics. A serviced 2.8D is a smart buy for shooters comfortable using an external meter.
