Buying Tips

The Rolleicord III is where the line starts to become genuinely capable. The key question is which lens variant you are getting.

• Xenar vs. Triotar: This model was sold with either a 4-element Schneider Xenar or a 3-element Zeiss Triotar. The Xenar is sharper and more desirable -- check the lens ring engraving carefully before buying. The price difference should reflect this.
• Shutter: The Compur-Rapid shutter goes to 1/500s. Test at all speeds, paying special attention to the slower end. Listen for 1s and 1/2s holding open for the correct duration.
• Auto-stop film advance: This is the first Rolleicord with automatic film stop. Verify it works by advancing an empty spool -- the mechanism should click and stop at each frame position.
• Self-timer: If the camera has a self-timer, test it. A seized self-timer is not critical for shooting but can indicate broader mechanical neglect.
• Bay I filter mount: Confirm the bayonet filter mount is undamaged. Bent or dented bayonet tabs make it difficult to attach filters and lens caps.
