History

When Paul Franke and Reinhold Heidecke introduced the Rolleiflex in 1929, they created more than a camera — they defined a category. The original used 117 film for 6x6cm exposures and established the twin-lens reflex design that would dominate professional photography for decades.

Notable Photographers

Established the TLR as a serious tool for professional photographers.

Buying Tips

The original Rolleiflex is a pre-war collectible first and a usable camera second. Here is what to check before buying.

  • Bellows condition: Unlike later rigid-body Rolleiflexes, the Original uses bellows for focusing. Inspect carefully for pinholes and light leaks by shining a light inside the camera in a dark room.
  • Focusing knob: The focusing knob can become stiff or seized with age. Turn it through the full range and check for smooth, even movement.
  • Film advance: The film advance mechanism can skip or jam. Cycle it several times to confirm reliable operation.
  • Red window counter: This camera uses a red window film counter rather than an automatic mechanism. Confirm the red window is intact and not faded beyond usefulness.
  • Display vs functional: Many units on the market are decorative or display-only pieces. Always confirm the camera is mechanically functional before paying working-camera prices.
  • Lens coating: Lens coating varies by production era. Earlier uncoated lenses are more prone to flare. Check for haze, fungus, and separation in both taking and viewing lenses.
