Collector Notes

First Rolleicord with self-timer. Excellent mid-tier model.

Buying Tips

The Rolleicord V is a significant redesign with a much more modern feel. It strikes an excellent balance of quality and value.

  • Shutter speeds: The Synchro-Compur MXV shutter should be tested at all speeds. Pay particular attention to the 1-second speed -- it should hold open for a full second before closing. Sluggish slow speeds are the most common mechanical issue.
  • Viewfinder brightness: Open the waist-level finder and check that the ground glass image is bright and even. A dim or uneven finder usually means the mirror needs replacing or the focusing screen is dirty.
  • Light seals: While rare on Rolleicords, light seal degradation is possible. Inspect the back door edges for crumbling foam or felt. This is an easy and inexpensive repair if needed.
  • Xenar lens: The Schneider Xenar 75mm f/3.5 is an excellent performer. Check for haze by shining a light through the lens from behind -- internal haze is the enemy of contrast.
  • Focus mechanism: Turn the focus knob through its full range from infinity to close focus. It should be smooth and consistent without sudden tight spots or looseness.
  • Self-timer: Test the self-timer mechanism. Cycle it a couple of times -- a stuck self-timer can jam the shutter if engaged accidentally in the field.
