History

Buying Tips

The 2.8E introduced the built-in meter to the f/2.8 line. Here is what to check when buying.

  • Meter accuracy: The larger selenium meter window is a key feature of the 2.8E. Test it in various lighting conditions against a handheld meter. Selenium cells degrade over time and cannot be replaced.
  • Shutter at all speeds: Test every shutter speed from 1s to 1/500s. Listen for consistent operation and watch for any sticking, especially at the slow end.
  • Service cost: Rolleiflex service quality is excellent but expensive. Factor in the cost of a CLA (typically $200-$400 from a specialist) if the camera has not been recently serviced.
  • Original case and accessories: A matching original leather case adds value and protects the camera. Check for the case, lens caps, and any original documentation.
  • Serial number and variant: The 2.8E was produced in several sub-variants (E, E2, E3). The serial number determines the exact model and features. Research the serial number before buying to confirm what you are getting.
