History

The 3.5F shares nearly identical construction with its f/2.8 sibling but with a slightly smaller, lighter f/3.5 lens. Many photographers prefer it for the reduced weight and the fact that Bay I accessories are cheaper and more plentiful than Bay III.

Notable Photographers

Chosen by photographers who valued the lighter weight for street and travel work.

Collector Notes

Premium 3.5 model. Lighter than 2.8F with comparable quality. Bay I filters are cheaper.

Buying Tips

The 3.5F is nearly as desirable as the 2.8F but more affordable. Here is what to look for.

  • Lens variant: Available with Zeiss Planar or Schneider Xenotar. Both are optically excellent 5-element designs. Confirm which lens is fitted — it affects resale value.
  • Selenium meter: The built-in selenium meter may have weakened over the decades. Test it in bright, medium, and low light against a handheld meter. A dead meter does not affect the camera mechanically but reduces its value.
  • Sticky slow speeds: Test the shutter at 1s, 1/2s, and 1/4s. The Synchro-Compur shutter's slow speed escapement is the most common mechanical issue. Listen for hesitation or inconsistent timing.
  • Optical quality vs 2.8F: The f/3.5 maximum aperture is only one stop slower than f/2.8. In practice, the optical performance is on par with the 2.8F, making the 3.5F a smart choice for buyers who want premium Rolleiflex quality at a lower price.
  • Weight advantage: At 1100g, the 3.5F is noticeably lighter than the 2.8F (1250g). If you plan to shoot all day, this matters. Handle both if possible before deciding.
