History

Introduced in 1933, the original Rolleicord brought Rollei engineering to a wider audience at a lower price than the Rolleiflex. Its distinctive Art Deco styling makes early models particularly collectible today.

Cultural Significance

The Art Deco models are prized by collectors for their distinctive appearance.

Collector Notes

Historic first Rolleicord. Art Deco version with patterned faceplate is rare and valuable.

Buying Tips

The Rolleicord I is primarily a collector's camera. If you want one to actually shoot, inspect carefully before purchasing.

  • Bellows: Check for pinholes by shining a light inside the camera body in a dark room. After 90+ years, bellows deterioration is almost guaranteed on unserviced examples.
  • Triotar lens: The 3-element Triotar is noticeably softer than the Xenar found on later models. Expect vintage character rather than clinical sharpness -- check for haze, fungus, and separation between elements.
  • Shutter: Fire the shutter at every speed. The simple Compur mechanism is durable but may be sluggish or stuck after decades without service. Budget for a CLA.
  • Focus knob: Turn the focus knob through its full range. Stiff or seized focusing is common and indicates dried lubricants that need professional attention.
  • Film advance: There is no auto-stop on this model -- you must watch the red window on the back to advance between frames. Confirm the red window cover is intact and that the advance knob turns freely.
  • Body condition: Inspect the Art Deco faceplate for dents or corrosion. Cosmetic damage significantly affects collector value on this model more than any other Rolleicord.
