Buying Tips

The Mamiyaflex C2 improved on the original C with better ergonomics. Here is what to check before buying.

  • Bellows condition: This is the number-one failure point on all Mamiya TLRs. Hold the body up to a bright light source and inspect the bellows for pinholes or cracks. Replacement bellows exist but require skilled installation.
  • Lens interlock: The lens interlock mechanism should engage and release smoothly. If it sticks or feels gritty, the body may need servicing before it is safe to swap lenses.
  • Focus rack: Turn the focus knobs on both sides. The rack should move smoothly without binding or dead spots. Grinding or resistance suggests dried lubricant or bent rails.
  • Shutter speeds: The Seikosha-MX leaf shutter lives in the lens, not the body. Test all speeds from 1s to 1/400s. Slow speeds (1s, 1/2s) are most likely to be sluggish.
  • Body and lens pairing: A body without a lens is useless unless you already have Mamiya C-series lenses. The 80mm f/2.8 is the standard lens and most commonly available. All C-series lenses are compatible.
