Buying Tips

The C220 is the lighter, simplified entry to the Mamiya interchangeable-lens TLR system. Here is what to check.

  • Bellows: Bellows condition is critical on every Mamiya C-series body. Open the back, hold the body to a bright light, and inspect carefully for pinholes. Even tiny pinholes cause light leaks on film.
  • Lens mount: Mount a lens and check for lateral play. The lens pair should lock securely with no wobble. A loose mount affects lens alignment and image sharpness.
  • No self-timer: The C220 omits the self-timer found on some other C-series bodies. This is by design, not a defect. If you need a self-timer, look at the C330 instead.
  • Weight advantage: At roughly 1.5kg with the 80mm lens, the C220 is noticeably lighter than the C330 series. This makes it more practical for field and travel use. Handle both before deciding.
  • Shared lens system: All lenses from the Mamiya C-series (C through C330S) are compatible. A body without a lens is not usable. The 80mm f/2.8 is the standard and most common. Budget for a lens if buying body-only.
  • Budget entry: The C220 is typically the most affordable way into the Mamiya interchangeable-lens TLR system. It trades some features (no interchangeable screens, no self-timer) for lower weight and lower price.
