History

The Mat-124 refined everything Yashica had learned over a decade of TLR production. Named for its ability to shoot 12 exposures on 120 film or 24 on 220 film, it featured a CdS meter and improved Yashinon optics that could hold their own against far more expensive cameras.

Innovations

  • CdS metering
  • 120/220 switching
  • Improved Yashinon optics

Collector Notes

Predecessor to the more refined 124G. Still excellent quality.

Buying Tips

The Mat-124 is often overlooked in favor of the 124G, which means better prices for a very similar camera. Here is what to check.

  • 120/220 switch: Toggle the film format selector between 120 and 220 positions. It should click firmly into each position. A stuck or loose switch can cause frame spacing errors.
  • CdS meter calibration: The CdS meter may have drifted over the decades. Test it against a phone meter app in bright and dim light — recalibration is possible but adds to your cost.
  • Crank focusing: Turn the focusing crank through its full range. It should be smooth and consistent. Worn helicoid threads or dried grease cause stiff or gritty focusing.
  • Shutter accuracy: Fire the Copal SV shutter at every speed from 1s to 1/500s. Slow speeds are the first to drift and the most expensive to repair.
  • Battery compartment: Open the battery door and check for corrosion. Even minor corrosion can cause intermittent meter readings.
  • Value advantage: The Mat-124 shares the same Yashinon optics and shutter as the 124G. Because collectors fixate on the G model, the original 124 often sells for significantly less — making it a smart buy for shooters.
