History

Produced for an impressive 14 years from 1958 to 1972, the Yashica-D became one of the most popular budget TLRs ever made. Its Rolleiflex-style control wheels and reliable Copal shutter made it a favorite of beginners and enthusiasts who wanted quality without the Rolleiflex price tag.

Cultural Significance

Often recommended as the ideal 'first TLR' for film photography beginners.

Buying Tips

The Yashica-D is one of the best value TLRs on the market. Here is what to inspect before buying.

  • Slow shutter speeds: The Copal MXV shutter covers 1s to 1/500s. Test the slow speeds (1s, 1/2, 1/5, 1/10) — these are the first to fail and often need a CLA to restore accuracy.
  • Viewing lens haze: Hold the camera up to a light source and look through the viewing lens. A hazy or cloudy viewing lens reduces contrast on the focusing screen, making precise focus difficult.
  • No meter advantage: The D has no light meter, which means no dead batteries, no corroded contacts, and no electronic failures. This makes it one of the most reliable Yashica TLRs for long-term use.
  • Focusing knob: Turn the focusing knob through its full range. It should move smoothly without grinding or stiff spots. A rough feel suggests dried helicoid grease that needs replacement.
  • Bay I filter ring: Check the front of the taking lens for dents or dings on the Bay I mount. A damaged mount will not accept filters or lens hoods properly.
  • Great value: With a 14-year production run, there are many Yashica-Ds available. Do not rush — a clean, serviced example at a fair price is worth waiting for.
