Buying Tips
The Autocord RG is a later unmetered model with improved mechanics. Here is what to look for when buying one.
- Shutter operation: Test the Optiper or Citizen MVL shutter carefully at all speeds. Fire each speed multiple times — listen for consistent timing, especially at the slow end where hesitation or sticking is most common.
- Self-timer: The self-timer mechanism can become sticky or jammed from old lubricant. Test it before purchase. A stuck self-timer is not a dealbreaker for shooting, but it indicates the camera may need a full CLA.
- Sub-variants: The RG was produced in RG I, II, and III sub-variants with incremental improvements. All share the same excellent Rokkor lens. Do not overpay for a specific sub-variant unless you are collecting.
- Rokkor lens: Inspect for haze, fungus, and cleaning marks on both taking and viewing elements. A clean Rokkor delivers sharp, contrasty results that rival cameras costing twice as much.
- Value compared to competitors: The RG is less well-known than the Yashica Mat or Rolleiflex equivalents, so market prices are often better. This makes it a strong value pick for a shooter who wants quality results without paying Rolleiflex prices.
- Repair access: Fewer technicians specialize in Autocord service compared to Rolleis or Yashicas. Before buying a camera that needs work, confirm you have access to a technician who can handle Minolta TLRs.
