Reciprocity Failure Calculator
When exposures exceed one second, Provia 100F requires additional time to compensate for reciprocity failure. The correction formula uses the exponent derived from Fujifilm’s technical data.
For all 22 films, see the reciprocity calculator.
Push & Pull Processing
Slide film has an extremely narrow exposure latitude of approximately 1/2 stop — far less forgiving than negative film. That said, Provia 100F is one of the most pushable slide films available and handles push processing better than Velvia or Ektachrome. It can be pushed up to 2 stops with usable results, which is unusual for E-6 film. Communicate push/pull instructions clearly to your lab.
| Rating | Effective ISO | Stops | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| EI 64 | 64 | −2/3 | Pull ½ stop — slightly lower contrast and saturation |
| EI 100 | 100 | 0 | Box speed — optimal balance of saturation and accuracy |
| EI 200 | 200 | +1 | Push 1 stop — slightly increased contrast, still excellent color |
| EI 400 | 400 | +2 | Push 2 stops — noticeable contrast increase; usable for low light |
Even with Provia's relatively good push capability, remember that slide film has approximately 1/2 stop of latitude compared to 5+ stops for color negative film. Bracketing in 1/3 stop increments remains essential for critical work. A reliable light meter is non-negotiable.
Character & Personality
Grain
Among the finest grain of any film ever made. Provia 100F has an RMS granularity of 8 — virtually no grain is visible in scans or prints. The ultra-fine grain structure combined with high resolving power produces images of exceptional clarity. Even in 35mm, grain is nearly invisible, making it one of the sharpest films available in any format.
Exposure Latitude
Narrow but more forgiving than Velvia. Provia 100F has approximately 1 stop of usable latitude in each direction, which is relatively generous for slide film. It handles slight overexposure better than Velvia 50. However, this is still far narrower than color negative film — Portra 400 offers 5+ stops of overexposure tolerance compared to Provia's single stop. Careful metering is essential. A spot meter or incident meter will give far more consistent results than camera matrix metering.
Color & Tonal Character
Vivid but naturally appearing colors with medium saturation and contrast. Unlike Velvia's hyper-saturated rendering, Provia 100F produces accurate, realistic colors with moderate saturation enhancement. Rich tonal rendition with excellent highlight and shadow detail. The film is often described as having “the punch of slide film with the accuracy of negative film.” Neutral color balance with good skin tone reproduction makes it the best slide film choice for portraits.
Best Suited For
- General-purpose slide photography — the most versatile E-6 film
- Nature and landscape when natural colors are preferred over Velvia's saturation
- Travel and documentary photography
- Portraits — the best slide film for skin tones
- Commercial and product photography
- Scientific and technical photography requiring color accuracy
Available Formats & Pricing
| Format | Approx. Price |
|---|---|
| 35mm (36 exp) | ~$18–25 USD |
| 120 (5-pack) | ~$65–80 USD |
| 4x5 (20 sheets) | ~$70–90 USD |
E-6 processing adds approximately $10–15 per roll on top of the film cost. Prices as of early 2026.
Development & Processing Notes
E-6 process — the same specialized processing required by all current slide films. E-6 labs are becoming less common, so locate a reliable lab before shooting. Many photographers ship their film to dedicated E-6 labs.
Provia 100F is more tolerant of push processing than Velvia — it produces usable results at EI 200–400 with extended development. Pulling 1/2 stop slightly reduces contrast and saturation. Cross-processing in C-41 produces high-contrast, color-shifted results that are popular for experimental work.
E-6 processing costs typically add $10–15 on top of the film cost. The film's excellent push capabilities make it more flexible than other slide films for changing lighting conditions. Store slides in cool, dry conditions to prevent color fading.
